The BF Loved It : Snake Eyes: Declassified (G. I. Joe)
I bought this as a gift for my bf's birthday. Snake Eyes is his favorite character in the GI Joe series. He said the thing he liked best about the novel was that it really helped flesh out the character's back story with previously unreleased information. He also really liked the art style and said it was very well done. He's difficult to please, but this gift hit the mark.

Did the other reviewers miss the point, or did I? : Joe Hill
This is a well-researched, fairly well-composed telling of the life and the trial and execution of Mr. Hill, which led to the famous and wonderful song, "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night." However, it convincingly argues that Joe most likely did MURDER two people that night in Salt Lake City in a botched robbery. So the explosive part of the story is not that "The copper bosses killed you, Joe" as the song declares, but that Joe got a fair trial, for his era, even in Utah. He was his own worst enemy during the legal proceedings, unwilling to cooperate with his attorneys and unable or unwilling to declare a credible alibi. This does not negate the power of some of his labor songs, or the power of songs about him, for songs do not have to tell the truth to be good songs. But to see four reviews, none of which point out that Joe was guilty, after all, is amazing. You can't read this book and respect Mr. Hill quite as much after you are done as you did when you were ignorant of the circumstances of the case. The song says "They framed you on a murder charge" and there has NEVER been any believable evidence produced to support the line. I wish the song WAS true, frankly.

Great Character : Deadpool Classic, Vol. 1
You get Deadpool's first appearance in New Mutants #1, his first two mini-series, and the first issue of the classic Joe Kelly run. Good stuff. Sure, it skips a few of his X-Force appearances, but those will probably end up in an X-Force Classic one of these days where they will work better anyway. Support this book so we can get the complete Joe Kelly run collected.

Timeless yet always fresh. : G.I. Joe Vs. The Transformers Volume 1 (v. 1)
This is absolutely one of the masterpieces of my collection. The mix of GI Joe and Transformers improves both. The Transformers feel larger and more epic than they ever had before, and the Joe's seem more fearless when battling for freedom among the giant transformers.
As a Transformers fan, I really appreciate the depth and accuracy given to each of the (relatively few) Transformers who star in this story. As a new GI Joe fan, it was a great introduction to some intersting characters.
This book is action packed, but remains fresh clever. The art does well to convey the story and is still engaging during the third re-read. The tone of this book is positive, extolling the virtues of bravery, cooperation, and heroism.
It's only fair to warn the buyer that this praise is equally true of the next two volumes as well. Book I is a good mix of attention on on the Joe's and the Transformers. Book II gives most of the attention to the Joe's, and book III leans more toward the Transformers. All three serve up good action, sparse but enjoyable dialog and clever plot shifts. If you're only going to buy one, buy this one to start, then buy the other two anyway. You'll love them!
